Heidi Heitkamp has aligned herself with corporate agribusiness at the expense of family farmers, supports fossil fuel interests, and holds views that are out of step with the majority of Americans. We need your help to push Joe Biden not to nominate her for USDA secretary.

Dear Honorable President-Elect Biden, Vice President-Elect Harris, and Members of the Presidential Transition Team:

I am writing to respectfully urge you to withdraw Heidi Heitkamp from consideration for U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary.

I applaud your administration’s commitments to fight climate change, revitalize rural America, and promote racial equity. That’s why I was alarmed to discover that Heidi Heitkamp is being considered for USDA Secretary. She has aligned herself with corporate agribusiness at the expense of family farmers, supports fossil fuel interests, and holds views that are out of step with the Democratic Party and the majority of Americans.

She has accepted tens of thousands of dollars in campaign donations from giant agribusiness companies and more than $600,000 from the fossil fuel industry. She led legislation that expanded subsidies and loopholes for Big Ag and thwarted progress on combating climate change. Her poor environmental record  earned her the second lowest lifetime rating for a Democrat from the League of Conservation Voters at the time she left office.

Tapping Heitkamp for USDA Secretary would enable the continuation of disastrous Trump-era food and farm policies, jeopardize President-Elect Biden’s climate goals, and boost corporate agribusiness at the expense of family farmers, frontline communities, the environment, hungry families, and animal welfare.

We need a USDA Secretary that we can fully trust to deliver a healthy, just, and sustainable food system.
