The first plug-in electric vehicles are expected to be available for purchase in 2011. Toyota has announced it will release a plug-in version of the Prius in 2011; General Motors is expected to release the much-anticipated Chevyt Volt in 2011. Likewise, the Nissan Leaf, a fully electric or "pure" electric vehicle, will be released in 2011.
Many other plug-in models from dozens of automakers are due out within the next 2-3 years. However, if you currently own a conventional hybrid, such as a Toyota Prius or Ford Escape Hybrid, you might consider converting your hybrid to a plug-in hybrid now. See our fact sheet on conversions for more information.
