Gerrymandered maps unconstitutional, North Carolina judges rule
WASHINGTON, DC – In a historic ruling handed down yesterday, a panel of three judges struck down legislative maps drawn by Republican lawmakers in North Carolina. The court found that the state’s districts were drawn in a way that did not permit fair representation for voters.
In response to the ruling, La’Meshia Whittington-Kaminski, Friends of the Earth’s North Carolina campaigner, issued the following statement:
The judges’ decision to strike down North Carolina’s unfair legislative maps is a great victory for the people of this state. Gerrymandering serves the purposes of those who want to pollute our environment, all too often targeting low-income populations and communities-of-color. This decision is a huge step toward reclaiming our democracy and it is a victory for a healthy environment for all North Carolinians.
