We may only have days to stop the financing for a dangerous, proposed coal project in Indonesia already plagued by human rights violations. Our Japanese and Indonesian allies have asked the international community to help put public pressure on the Japanese government to reject financing this coal project while there’s still time. If built, the proposed Batang coal plant in Central Java, Indonesia would pose serious threats to the health and environment of surrounding communities and our climate.
Frontline communities in Central Java have delayed the 2,000 MW Batang coal-fired power plant for four years by refusing to give up their land despite threats, arrests and attempts by the military to block their access to farmland. Now the Japanese government is considering whether or not to provide financing for the project before the April 6 deadline for financial close, despite a warning from an Indonesian human rights group earlier this year that Japan must review the human rights issues surrounding the project. If the financing is locked in for this project, construction could start only mere days later.
Despite an increasing shift away from dangerous and unprofitable coal projects by the rest of the world — from the Paris Agreement to OECD coal finance restrictions a China putting the brakes on new coal plants a Scotland completely ending all coal use — Japan has continued to move backward by supporting both domestic coal projects and financing some of the most controversial coal projects around the globe.
Protests are being held across the world from Washington, D.C., to Jakarta to Tokyo this week to demand the Japanese government reject funding the Batang coal plant and end all coal financing abroad.
