WASHINGTON, D.C.—The City Council voted unanimously today advance the “Clean and Affordable Energy Act of 2008” on its first reading. This innovative and historic legislation will establish a sustainable energy utility to reduce the city’s energy use, train residents for green jobs, and help low-income residents limit their energy bills through improved efficiency.
Chris Weiss, who heads Friends of the Earth’s D.C. Environmental Network, responded with the following statement:
“The climate crisis is a global challenge, but the actions of even one city can make an important difference. As the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. has a special obligation to show leadership by confronting this crisis head-on and providing clean and affordable energy to its citizens. Today’s advancement of the Clean and Affordable Energy Act showed such leadership. This act will limit pollution that threatens District residents’ health and way of life. At the same time, it will stimulate our economy and train citizens for green-collar jobs. This is a win-win for the city. Council members deserve credit.”
