Friends of the Earth statement on the Third National Climate Assessment

Washington, D.C. – The White House’s Third National Climate Assessment documents the devastating and immediate impacts of climate change throughout the United States, drawing upon the expertise of nearly 300 scientists and other issue experts across public, private and academic sectors.

Friends of the Earth Climate and energy campaigner, Kate DeAngelis, issued the following statement in response to the report:

While this report is important, every American has already experienced these impacts — whether from the rising flood waters of Superstorm Sandy or rising grocery bills. The only question left is whether governments around the world — especially the United States — are going to heed to the warnings and do what is necessary.

The Obama administration has merely paid lip service to implementing climate policy. It has failed to move the nation toward an economy built upon renewable energy, and acted as a constant barrier to real and lasting international climate progress. Today, we are once again reminded that the U.S. must take bold steps by ending our reliance on fossil fuels and encouraging the rest of the world to follow suit; leadership by example. We cannot afford to wait.
