Obama administration labels liquefied natural gas export facility as environmentally insignificant

WASHINGTON,  D.C. – The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission found that Cheniere Energy’s proposed liquefied natural gas export plant in Corpus Christi, Texas would have no significant adverse impact on the environment. Cheniere’s second LNG export plant — the first is under construction in Sabine Pass, Louisiana — would liquefy as much as 2.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas for daily export.

Friends of the Earth’s Climate and energy campaigner Kate DeAngelis offers the following statement, in response:

With one hand President Obama curbs emissions from coal plants, while encouraging more natural gas export with the other. This contradiction exemplifies backwards energy leadership rather than environmental change in which we can believe. If the Obama administration does not consider LNG’s  greenhouse gases emissions — higher than even coal — and its contamination of our air and water significantly impactful to the environment, it is hard to imagine what it would consider significant. We are baffled by FERC’s twisting of science in its findings.
