Bipartisan Senate bill to tackle broken Renewable Fuel Standard

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senators Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Toomey (R-Penn.) introduced a bipartisan bill to reform the federal Renewable Fuel Standard. The RFS requires U.S. blenders to use increasing amounts of biofuels in the U.S. fuel supply going towards 2022, including 15 billion gallons of corn ethanol in 2015. The bill would end the mandate for corn ethanol but leave untouched mandates for so-called “advanced” biofuels.

Friends of the Earth Climate and Energy campaigner Lukas Ross issued the following statement in support:

The harmful impact of corn ethanol on our land, water and climate demands meaningful reform. We applaud Senators Feinstein and Toomey for beginning the process of fixing a problem that Congress created. But unless more is done, this unworkable policy will continue to endanger our planet by encouraging false solutions at the expense of our climate and public health.
