Energy Department dispels myth of clean coal

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Citing project delays, the Department of Energy announced it would cease funding FutureGen 2.0, an experimental coal facility in Meredosia, Illinois that was intended to capture and sequester carbon emissions. FutureGen 2.0 is the second iteration after the initial idea of a zero emission coal facility proved unworkable.

Friends of the Earth Climate and energy campaigner Lukas Ross issues the following response:

Today marks another nail in the coffin of the “clean coal” myth. After 10 years and millions of wasted dollars, the Department of Energy announced what we knew all along: coal has no place in our energy future.

The sooner we stop pretending that coal can be burned safely, the sooner we can start making crucial investments in renewable energy. Coal needs to be kept in the ground, not subsidized by taxpayers.
