Friends of the Earth joins other groups in protest against Trojan horse trade treaties

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Abe is visiting D.C. to push fast track for the Trans Pacific Partnership, and he will be speaking to a joint session of Congress. This is the first time that any Japanese Prime Minister has addressed a joint session and highlights how important the TPP is to leadership in both countries.

Friends of the Earth joined other groups in a protest near the U.S. Capitol, where they brought a Trojan horse to illustrate the dangers of the agreements.

Friends of the Earth’s Climate and Energy Campaigner Luísa Abbott Galvão issued the following statement on the action:

The Trojan horse that was brought out today symbolizes the insidious nature of these trade deals: they look majestic on the outside, but in reality they are a travesty for justice and the environment. The invisible hand of the market is literally writing these trade deals, as corporate advisors guide the hands of government diplomats and keep the public in the dark.

Our members see through this charade and know that these deals would open the floodgates to fossil fuel exports, give corporations new powers and increase corporate control over our natural resources. Fast Track legislation paves the way for this corporate bill of rights. A vote for Fast Track is a vote to sell-out our environment and a vote for climate calamity.
