DOEs rubberstamp cooks the planet

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Energy gave final approval to Cove Point, a liquefied natural gas export terminal in Maryland.

Studies by the Department of Energy and the European Commission have suggested that the huge amounts of energy required to liquefy natural gas actually make the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions from liquefied natural gas worse for the climate than those from coal. The production process for LNG also results in almost double the greenhouse gas emissions of conventional natural gas.

Friends of the Earth Climate and Energy Campaigner Kate DeAngelis offers the following statement in response:

When science shows that 80 percent of fossil fuels must stay in the ground, this approval is unconscionable. By rubberstamping Cove Point, DOE has condemned future generations to a world of climate chaos. With its most recent LNG export facility approval, DOE has shown they are putting oil and gas industry profits over clean air, clean water and a safe climate.
