Administration should pull the plug on TTIP, TiSA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw from the Trans Pacific Partnership. Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica issued the following response:

As a result of years of grassroots pressure, the TPP faced broad public opposition and could not achieve majority support in Congress since it was signed in February 2016.

Although Donald Trump has pulled the plug on the TPP, the U.S. should also reject all trade agreements based on the same damaging model — including the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and the Trade in Services Agreement, which are currently under negotiation.

Going forward, the U.S. needs to comprehensively build a new trade policy approach that is designed to create American jobs and reduce our trade deficit while raising wages and protecting the environment and public health. Historically, most congressional Democrats have opposed trade deals for not meeting these goals, while most congressional Republicans have supported them. The American people have demanded trade reform, but whether Trump’s trade policies will deliver on jobs, the environment and public health remains to be seen.
