Exxon’s Tillerson proves unqualified to be Secretary of State

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to today’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing on the nomination of Rex Tillerson for secretary of state, Friends of the Earth U.S. President Erich Pica issued the following statement:

Rex Tillerson’s performance at today’s Senate confirmation hearing personified the human rights-violating, climate denying, truth-bending, fact-evading record of the company to which he pledged allegiance for 41 years. From Aceh, Indonesia to Chad and Russia, ExxonMobil has left a wake of human and environmental devastation. Based on today’s testimony, there is little hope that the man at the helm of that destruction would conduct affairs differently at the Department of State.

You can try to take the man out of ExxonMobil, but you can’t take ExxonMobil out of the man. The Senate must reject Tillerson’s nomination for secretary of state.
