Senate energy package must avoid dirty energy and dangerous extraction

WASHINGTON – Environmental and conservation groups are urging the leaders of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to exclude expected portions of a major energy package anticipated this week.

In a letter addressed to Chairwoman Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Ranking Member Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), the groups call for the exclusion of problematic legislation that would weaken bedrock environmental laws, promote dangerous mining and subsidize dirty energy.

“With the climate crisis upon us, we cannot afford to rely solely on the promise of innovation,” wrote the groups. “We are afraid that some of the legislation under consideration for possible inclusion in the package would double-down on destructive extraction practices, fossil fuel consumption, and the promotion of other dirty energy sources.”

The letter was signed by Center for Biological Diversity, Clean Water Action, Earthworks, Endangered Species Coalition, Environment America, Friends of the Earth, Oil Change International, Nuclear Information and Resource Service and the Sierra Club.
