Green groups align behind a push to ax fossil fuel subsidies

WASHINGTON – In a letter to the White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy, CEOs from a range of environmental groups urged her to make sure fossil fuel subsidies are eliminated in the budget reconciliation process, the Democrat-controlled parallel to the bipartisan infrastructure package.

The message follows a letter to Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer from more than 500 environmental, public health, development, fiscal justice, labor, youth and faith organizations to end fossil fuel subsidies.

“It is critical that the President’s proposed budget succeed in eliminating the $121 billion in subsidies that incentivize the development and extraction of oil and gas deposits across the country and abroad,” the letter reads.

Environmental groups see the reconciliation process as the primary opening to eliminate the billions in subsidies that have been embedded in the tax code for over a hundred years, in some cases.

“Big Oil doesn’t deserve another minute of giveaways, let alone another hundred years,” said Lukas Ross, Program Manager at Friends of the Earth. “The coming reconciliation package is an unmissable chance to protect communities and the climate by repealing fossil fuel subsidies once and for all.”
