Senate rejects Warrens trade amendment
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate failed to pass SA 1327, an amendment from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to the ‘Fast Track’ Trade Promotion Authority bill. The amendment would prohibit the application of Fast Track to any trade agreement that includes investor-state dispute settlement.
Friends of the Earth Climate and Energy Campaigner Luísa Abbott Galvão responded to the vote:
With today’s vote, the Senate told the American people that clean water and clean air are ‘trade barriers’ that can be sacrificed for the sake of corporate profits. To guarantee polluters their inalienable right to profit, the Senate voted to give large corporations special tribunals outside domestic jurisdiction in which to defend their bottom line against these ‘trade barriers.’ Today’s vote was a gift to polluting industries and an attack on our environment and democracy.
