Corporate Congress rejects progressive budget

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The House of Representatives rejected the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ People’s Budget by a vote of 96-330. The People’s Budget was offered as a substitute amendment to the GOP budget resolution by Congressional Progressive Caucus. It would have ended sequestration, implemented a carbon tax, and closed Big Oil tax loopholes.

Friends of the Earth Climate and Energy campaigner Lukas Ross issued the following statement:

We thank the Progressive Caucus, and especially Co-chairs Reps. Keith Ellison and Raul Grijalva, for providing us with a vision for a just society. It is sad, but not surprising, that a Congress bought and paid for by the Koch Brothers would reject these common sense solutions. A plan to end corporate welfare for Big Oil, to impose a tax on Wall Street transactions and tax carbon emissions would have been serious wins in the fights against climate disruption and inequality. The sooner we sever the pipeline of corporate cash to our lawmakers the sooner progressive victories for people over corporations will become possible.
