Act Together for another World

The World Social Forum unites thousands of activists, social movements, civil society groups, NGOs, unions, universities and fellow Friends of the Earth sister groups from around the world and will host more than 2,500 seminars, workshops and other activities focused on environmental and social justice issues. Our aim is to create an alternative space and perspective for envisioning our future, which is distinct from the failing standpoint of many governments and corporations.

This past year Friends of the Earth participated in the U.S. Social Forum, the European Social Forum, and the Americas Social Forum. The World Social Forum converges these and many other regional social forums. We’ve taken part in these events to highlight our important campaigns and to network with social movements worldwide—all in hopes of nurturing our mission to help create a healthier and more just world.

This year we’re in the Amazon and the forum holds an ecological focus. The forum will be a space for Amazonian movements, tribes and local peoples to speak to the world about issues they are facing, such as the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Belem is also the first WSF to take place since the emergence of the financial crisis; reflection amongst movements on this matter is certain to take place.
