Petitioning EPA to Regulate Global Warming Pollution from Factory Farms

The Humane Society of the United States, with Friends of the Earth and others, petitioned EPA to regulate global warming pollution and other air pollution from Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), or factor farms.  The petition outlines the serious threat that CAFOs have on the environment, both globally through global warming pollutants, but also locally through other air pollution that has adverse impacts on human health.

As Congress and the Administration are gearing up to hopefully address global warming, often neglected in these conversations are the impacts that most animal agriculture have on global warming.  A little known fact is that, according to the United National Food and Agriculture Organization, animal agriculture emits more global warming pollution than transportation does.  Meanwhile, much of the legislative proposals to deal with global warming do not include any regulation of this polluting industry.  Since Congress will not do it, it is up to the EPA to regulate these emissions.
