WASHINGTON, D.C.—Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica had the following statement in response to today’s introduction by Sen. John Rockefeller (D-W.V.) of a bill that would freeze enforcement of global warming pollution through the Clean Air Act for at least two years:
“Thebill introduced by Sen. Rockefeller would allow climate-warming pollution from the country’s biggest industrial emitters to continue unchecked. It is yet another example of the overwhelming power polluting corporate interests have in Washington.
“With this bill, Sen. Rockefeller is siding with the dirty coal industry over West Virginia’s citizens, whose local economies and communities suffer at the hand of destructive coal mining practices that continue to blow Appalachian mountains to pieces.
“The Clean Air Act is the most effective existing tool to cut this pollution. Sen. Rockefeller’s proposed two-year freeze on enforcement of the Clean Air Act would reward special interests at the expense of the public interest and could lead to a permanent rollback of this law. It is unacceptable.”
