Friends of the Earth responds to Paul Ryans bid for House Speaker

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) has given the conditions under which he would enter the race for Speaker of the House. Currently the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Ryan was chairman of the House Budget Committee and a GOP vice presidential nominee.

Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica issued the following statement in response:

Paul Ryan’s name is synonymous with deep cuts to government spending in order to increase corporate welfare and tax cuts for the super-rich. He penned the most extreme budget in living memory and now he seeks the third most senior position in our government. As a potential Speaker of the House, Chairman Paul Ryan would be devastating to our ability to create a healthy and just world.
