Cuomo rejects Williams Pipeline

NEW YORK – New York state Department of Environmental Conservation last night denied a permit to the Williams Pipeline, a natural gas pipeline set to connect the gas fields of Pennsylvania to the New York and New Jersey harbor.

In response, Jenny Bock, Senior Organizer with Friends of the Earth and native New Yorker, issued the following statement:

At a moment when scientists tell us we need to keep fossil fuels in the ground and rapidly transition to renewable energy, last night’s victory builds momentum in our fight against new pipelines.

Stopping this unnecessary and dangerous pipeline is a victory in our fight to keep fossil fuels in the ground. The fight over fossil fuel infrastructure is not over, and we will continue to stand with communities across the United States to protect our climate, air, land and water. How close we were to building this pipeline is all the more reason why New York State and the U.S. Congress need to pass a moratorium on all new fossil fuel projects. There is no room for fossil fuels in a Green New Deal.
