FOE Statement on the appointment of Deb Haaland as U.S. Secretary of the Interior
WASHINGTON, D.C.- In response to reports that President-elect Joe Biden will nominate Rep. Deb Haaland to be the Secretary to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Friends of the Earth’s Fossil Fuels Program Manager, Nicole Ghio, issued the following statement:
Friends of the Earth is thrilled that Biden will nominate Rep. Deb Haaland for Interior Secretary. Haaland will be a champion of our public lands and waters, and the communities that rely on them. There is no one better to rebuild the Department of the Interior after the Trump Administration’s efforts to turn our shared wild places over to extractive industries. Haaland will be the first Native person to lead the DOI, despite the Department’s trustee obligations to Indigenous Peoples, Tribal Nations, Native Hawaiians and Alaska Natives. Haaland’s nomination is historic and long overdue.
