Friends of the Earth condemns passage of Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act
WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives voted today to pass the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act.
In response, Karen Orenstein, climate and energy program director at Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:
Friends of the Earth condemns the passage of the so-called Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act. As the climate crisis fuels fires, hurricanes and food insecurity across the globe, the Democratic leadership’s focus should not be on doling out billions in giveaways to the fossil fuel and nuclear industries.
Carbon capture and storage is not a solution to the climate crisis, it is part of the problem. The fossil fuel industry has propagated this extraordinarily expensive pipe dream in an attempt to save itself. Carbon capture and storage worsens pollution in frontline communities, distracts us from real climate solutions, and siphons away billions of much-needed public subsidies.
