Environmental, rights and justice groups urge Gov. Cooper to stop Atlantic Coast Pipeline
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – A coalition of more than 65 environmental, justice and human rights groups from throughout the U.S. and North Carolina are calling on NC Governor Roy Cooper to stop the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. In a letter delivered to the governor, the groups noted the irreparable harm the ACP would cause to Native American, African American, and low-income communities, as well as the climate and the environment. The letter comes just days before a case involving the ACP will be heard by the Supreme Court.
In response, Donna Chavis, senior fossil fuels campaigner with Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:
If Governor Cooper truly is the environmental champion that he claims to be, he must shut down the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. This project is already destroying our communities and our climate, and the damage will only get worse. We urge the governor to listen to the people of North Carolina, who overwhelmingly oppose the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. If Governor Cooper fails to act, an indelible stain of climate catastrophe and environmental racism will blemish his legacy.
