House Votes to Ignore Climate Impacts
WASHINGTON, D.C. –The House of Representatives voted today to support an amendment by Rep. Mullin (R.-Okla.) to the appropriations package that would prohibit federal agencies from considering the social cost of carbon when writing environmental regulations and guidance.
Friends of the Earth Senior Political Strategist Ben Schreiber issued the following response to today’s vote:
Even as the U.S. and the Caribbean deal with the devastating effects of two hurricanes, the House of Representatives has voted to act as if climate change is not happening. Forcing the government to ignore the costs of climate change is climate denial and it is an insult to everyone who just lost their home or their livelihood.
There is no doubt that we are already feeling the effects of years of refusal to act on climate change. Every Representative who voted for this provision will bear responsibility when the next inevitable storm comes.
