Steny Hoyer backs Big Oil

WASHINGTON – Majority Leader Steny Hoyer publicly supported the idea of filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve today – a giveaway to the fossil fuel industry that Trump and the GOP had previously pursued. Hoyer compared the idea of stockpiling oil to stockpiling personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies and spoke favorably about oil and gas companies being generally eligible for stimulus funds.

Friends of the Earth senior policy analyst Lukas Ross issued the following response:

Majority Leader Hoyer should apologize for his inane and insensitive comment. Protecting medical professionals and sick Americans is not the same as protecting fossil fuels, full stop. How can we expect Democrats to fight against a Big Oil bailout when the second-highest ranking Democrat in the House is ready to roll over for the industry?
