Trump guts bedrock environmental law
WASHINGTON – Trump is expected to announce today his administration’s final rollback of the implementing procedures for the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which requires federal agencies to take a “hard look” at significant environmental, economic, social, or health impacts a project may have before allowing the project to commence. The rollback will rush agency reviews, exempt some projects from the NEPA process, and allow agencies to ignore a number of environmental consequences.
Marcie Keever, legal director for Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement in response:
The Trump Administration’s attacks on NEPA are dangerous and unforgivable. As our nation grapples with a deadly public health crisis, Trump is busy prioritizing additional giveaways to corporate polluters. This egregious rollback clears the way for Big Oil, Big Mining and Big Ag to destroy our communities and our environment without consequence. We will not stand back while the Trump Administration tries to silence vulnerable communities fighting against toxic pollution in their own backyards.
