Trump to slash Bears Ears National Monument
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight Donald Trump informed Utah Senator Orrin Hatch that he intends to shrink Bears Ears National Monument, a 1.35 million acre area in southeast Utah, according to the Washington Post.
In response, Ben Schreiber, Senior Political Strategist at Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:
Donald Trump has put Big Oil profits over the wishes of the majority of Americans who want to keep fossil fuels in the ground. Over 2.8 million comments demanded that the protections for Bears Ears National Monument be kept in place.
This decision is a slap in the face to the Native American tribes who worked for decades to get this sacred land protected. Trump’s action is illegal and there is no doubt that it will be litigated in the courts.
