Artificial Intelligence,
Data Centers, and Climate Change
Artificial Intelligence
Billionaires at Big Tech companies are trying to push artificial intelligence (AI) on our society.
Friends of the Earth is working to make sure the voices of people and the planet are heard as we take on the disastrous consequences of the AI frenzy.
AI chatbots are spewing out disinformation at record rates. The frenzy to power data centers for AI is massively expanding the methane gas industry, keeping coal plants online, and threatening to revive the nuclear industry – worsening the climate crisis. The water use of data centers is immense and unsustainable. Consumers are footing the bill with rising electricity costs, while communities already overburdened by pollution are faced with even more pollution and public health harms.
The AI industry is fighting to keep these stories secret and prevent transparency on data center energy use, and the effects of its content on society.

AI systems require an enormous amount of energy and water, and consumption is expanding quickly. Estimates suggest a doubling in 5-10 years.
Behind the Curtain of How Big Tech Greenwashes Impacts
The expansion of data centers – which is driven in
large part by AI growth – is creating a shocking new
demand for fossil fuels.
