Doug Jones Wins Stunning Upset in Alabama Senate Race

 WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a stunning upset, Doug Jones, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, tonight defeated Roy Moore to win the seat, according to the Associated Press.

In response to the victory, Erich Pica, President of Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:

Tonight’s victory in Alabama serves as a warning for those who think they can abuse their power from disbarred Judges to the President himself. Truth and justice won the day again, and this was driven by women, people of color and LGBT voters—the groups consistently attacked by the GOP’s immoral agenda.

With tonight’s result, the Senate must delay the vote on the GOP’s tax bill—with its radical agenda to destroy environmental protections, allow drilling in the Arctic, defund Planned Parenthood, and enrich corporations, until Senator-elect Doug Jones is seated. From Virginia to Alabama, people across this country are standing up for fairness and equality.
