Company Commitments on GMO Salmon
Friends of the Earth has worked to stop genetically engineered salmon from entering the market without proper oversight and public input.
Genetically engineered — or GMO — salmon is salmon that has been genetically engineered in a laboratory to grow faster than conventional farmed salmon.
The best-known example is AquAdvantage salmon, which was engineered by adding a growth hormone gene from Chinook salmon and a genetic control sequence from ocean pout. This allows the salmon to grow to market size more quickly.
Working with consumers, scientists, Indigenous fishers, environmental advocates, and responsible businesses, Friends of the Earth helped build a movement to keep genetically engineered salmon off store shelves and restaurant menus. As a result, dozens of major grocery stores, seafood companies, and restaurant chains have pledged not to sell it.
This market rejection sends a clear message: consumers want a food system that is transparent, sustainable, and accountable, and that puts environmental protection and public interest ahead of corporate profits.
