White House doubles down on all-of-the-above energy strategy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Obama administration released an update on its “all-of-the-above” energy strategy. The report heavily advocates increased domestic oil and gas production, citing the nation’s economic growth and national security strategy, while endorsing a token increase in renewable energy production. This report comes days before the president is expected to announce new greenhouse gas regulations for existing power plants.

Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica issued the following statement in response to the announcement:

Through his continued support of fossil fuels — the biggest contributors to global climate disruption — President Obama has shown once again that his administration does not grasp the gravity of the pending climate crisis. The president’s commitment to dirty technologies like coal and fracked gas is shortsighted and in direct opposition to his rhetoric that climate change is a ‘creeping national security crisis.’

The concept of all-of-the-above was pioneered by the oil lobby in order to justify inaction on climate change. If President Obama hopes to build a legacy of climate action, he must abandon all-of-the-above and take serious and immediate steps to move the United States away from fossil energy. We must keep fossil fuels in the ground and move the world toward a clean energy future. Clean energy is now cheaper and more efficient than ever, and the time to take global leadership is now.
