Friends of the Earth Rocks Against the TPP in Portland

PORTLAND, OREGONOn Saturday, August 20 in Portland Oregon’s Director Park, Friends of the Earth will join actress Evangeline Lilly, and musicians Anti-Flag (acoustic), comedian Hari Kondabolu, Downtown Boys, Danbert Nobacon of Chumbawamba, Naima Penniman of Climbing Poetree, and others for a free concert to highlight opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement that will soon be presented to Congress. On Sunday, August 21, at Portland’s First Unitarian Church a teach-in & training will be hosted by Evangeline Lilly. The Rock Against the TPP events in Portland are part of a series of rock concerts and teach-ins concerning the most environmentally dangerous trade deal you never heard of, the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Douglas Norlen, the director of economic policy at Friends of the Earth, who will speak at the events and lead the Friends of the Earth delegation in Seattle, said:

This free concert is fun and educational. Most importantly, it effectively communicates to Members of Congress from the State of Oregon that a vote for the TPP is a vote for climate destruction. The TPP would ramp up global warming by increasing U.S. coal, oil and gas exports to the world. TPP would also allow climate polluters to turn to secretive international tribunals where they can sue governments for billions. TransCanada is using a similar provision in the North American Free Trade Agreement to sue the U.S. for $15 billion for stopping construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Friends of the Earth will continue to rock against the TPP until this unjust corporate power grab is dead in the water.
