Clean Energy Standard Act promotes false solutions, doesn’t do enough to address climate crisis

WASHINGTON – Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) and Rep. Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.) introduced the “Clean Energy Standard Act” today, which mandates that utilities increase low-carbon energy available to consumers.

In response, Nicole Ghio, Senior Fossil Fuel Program Manager at Friends of the Earth, released the following statement:

Friends of the Earth welcomes bold action to fight climate change and transition the U.S. to 100% renewable energy. Unfortunately, the legislation introduced by Sen. Tina Smith and Rep. Ben Ray Lujan does not provide the solutions we need to address the climate crisis.

We cannot afford to dump more money down drain in support of false solutions like nuclear and carbon capture and storage. Instead of investing in expensive, dangerous and unproven technology, we must prioritize proven renewable energy solutions and clear emission reduction targets.
