FOE on MLGW decision to suspend utility disconnects

Friends of the Earth applauds MLGW’s decision to suspend utility disconnects for non-payment during coronavirus crisis

MEMPHIS – Following the response by Memphis Light, Gas, and Water to the coronavirus, Friends of the Earth Vice-President for Programs Michelle Chan and FOE Special Advisor and former MLGW President and CEO Herman Morris issued the following joint statement:

As the coronavirus pandemic sweeps across Memphis, the Mid-South, and the country we at Friends of the Earth support and applaud the decision of Memphis Light, Gas & Water to temporarily suspend disconnects for non-payments.

We also commend the elected leaders of Memphis and Shelby County who supported this move, for putting their constituents – the families of Memphis – first. We need more of this kind of community-minded leadership from elected officials at all levels of government.

As a thought-leader in energy conservation, Friends of the Earth stands ready to assist city leaders with the longer-term challenge of helping to ensure energy security for all Memphians, who can benefit from energy conservation programs and accessing cheaper, cleaner wholesale electricity.
