Senate energy package supports dirty energy and dangerous extraction

WASHINGTON – Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairwoman Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Ranking Member Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) today released the American Energy Innovation Act. The proposal includes a variety of provisions, including support for LNG exports, rare earth mineral extraction, nuclear power and carbon capture and sequestration.

This morning environmental groups sent Senators Murkowski and Manchin a letter highlighting concerns with many bills subsequently included in the broader package.

In response to the bill, Friends of the Earth senior policy analyst Lukas Ross issued the following statement:

Fracked gas, nuclear energy and disastrous mining techniques are not solutions to the climate crisis. We oppose this energy package and call on Speaker Pelosi to keep this bill from coming to the floor of the House.

The climate crisis is here. We need to focus on deploying the proven renewable solutions that already exist. The stakes are simply too high to gamble the future on innovation.
