Friends of the Earth Still Opposes Disastrous Senate Permitting Bill
Even amended, BAAJA is unacceptable
WASHINGTON — Today, Senators Capito, Lee, Whitehouse, and Heinrich released the substitute amendment to the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act (BAAJA). The amendment fails to address the most egregious aspects of the bill, including the evisceration of the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and National Historic Preservation Act.
Erich Pica, President of Friends of the Earth U.S., issued the following statement today:
“This isn’t a permitting compromise, it’s a sellout. Americans have made it clear they want their elected leaders to prioritize people’s health and wallets over corporate profits. Even amended, BAAJA is filled with industry giveaways that throw communities and our environment under the fossil fuel and data center bus. There is no reason why we should pass such a heinous bill in Lame Duck when we will soon be ushering in a new Congress in January. The last thing we should be doing before the holiday season is gifting Trump another way to destroy this country.”
