U.S shamefully departs Paris Agreement

WASHINGTON- The United States officially departed the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change today. This follows a yearlong waiting period triggered by the Trump Administration’s formal notification to the UN of the U.S. departure.

In response, Karen Orenstein, director of the climate and energy program at Friends of the Earth U.S., issued the following statement:

Today’s official departure of the United States from the Paris Agreement is a mark of shame for our country. Trump’s reckless disdain for science and for the hundreds of millions of people suffering from the effects of climate change is disgraceful.

Regardless of who sits in the White House six months from now, the United States government must treat the climate crisis like the existential threat that it is. The U.S. must devise and implement measures based on science, justice, and equity — grounded in our disproportionate responsibility for causing the crisis. This must be done within our own country and internationally.
