NAFTA 2.0 Negotiations Nosedive Headed into the G-7 Summit
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Trump’s proposed NAFTA revisions threaten food, chemical and biotechnology safeguards, among other environmental protections. Ironically, Trump’s bullying of Canada and Mexico in NAFTA 2.0 negotiations, including his slapping of steel and aluminum tariffs on the countries in the run-up to the G-7 summit, are an obliteration of what little trust still exists with his two negotiating partners.
Bill Waren, senior trade analyst at Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:
It is an outrage that Trump wants a new NAFTA that threatens food, chemical and biotechnology safeguards, among other environmental protections. Trump’s racist attacks on the Mexican people in the course of NAFTA negotiations and his belligerent disrespect for the Canadian people are even more disgraceful. Trump’s bellicose behavior is sending his environmentally disastrous proposal into a nosedive. As is the typically case with a child, Trump lacks the impulse control to negotiate a new trade deal.
