Environmental Groups, Frontline Communities Celebrate Latest Defeat for Manchin’s Dirty Deal
WASHINGTON – Today, environmental groups and frontline communities were once again successful in blocking Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) from including an amended version of the Energy Security and Independence Act in a must-pass bill. Congress is soon expected to release the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) without the anti-environment so-called “permitting reform” provisions.
This marks Manchin’s latest failure to garner enough support for his plan, after his first legislative ploy was removed from a Continuing Resolution to fund the federal government in September.
Ariel Moger, Government and Political Affairs Director at Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:
This most recent setback for Manchin’s dirty energy giveaway is a monumental victory for the environmental movement, whose strong opposition once again stopped this scheme in its tracks.
Manchin’s efforts to tie his dirty deal to any must-pass legislation he can get his hands on are undemocratic and potentially devastating for the planet. With momentum on the side of frontline communities, the fight will continue until the bill dies at the end of this Congress. We cannot, and will not, stop until Manchin’s dirty deal is completely defeated.
