Greens ask Hillary Clinton where she stands on fossil fuels

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Friends of the Earth and the Center for Biological Diversity attended the award celebration of The Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting, where former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was a keynote speaker, to express their concerns regarding her history on fracking, the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and government transparency. They demanded that she clarify her positions on these issues.

Friends of the Earth’s Climate and Energy Program Director Ben Schreiber issued the following statement on the action:

We have serious questions about Secretary Clinton’s commitment to climate justice. Her foundation has taken millions of dollars from some of the world’s most polluting companies, like ExxonMobil, that are driving the climate crisis. These donations create, at the very least, the appearance of impropriety.

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton pushed countries to risk their water safety in order to frack for natural gas. The profits of this “diplomacy” would have gone to ExxonMobil and Chevron.

Secretary Clinton’s refusal to talk about the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, after indicating she would approve the project while she was Secretary of State, is especially disconcerting. We will never fully know what role Secretary Clinton played in the State Department’s flawed environmental review of the Keystone XL pipeline because she is serving as arbiter of what documents the public can see. By conducting government business with a personal email address, Secretary Clinton undermined the integrity of a law that is the bedrock of good governance in the U.S.
