Friends of the Earth Joins San Onofre Settlement

Berkeley, CA – Friends of the Earth has announced, today, that it is joining a settlement negotiated by The Utility Reform Network and the Office of Ratepayer Advocates with the utilities Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas and Electric Company, which would bring to a close the California Public Utilities Commission’s Order Instituting Investigation associated with the technical failure of the San Onofre nuclear reactors.

President Erich Pica of Friends of the Earth issued the following statement:

“We want to thank the Commissioners and Staff of the PUC for convening the OII and demanding an explanation and accounting from Southern California Edison for the dramatic failure of the nuclear reactors at San Onofre. The agreement reached with the help of TURN and ORA is fair and a win-win for rate payers throughout Southern California: who no longer need to fear a reactor meltdown in their backyards and instead of bailing out Southern California Edisonwill be getting money back. The recent earthquakes in Southern California were a reminder of how fortunate we are to have San Onofre shut down for good.”
