Tax-Free Giving From Your IRA

If you are 70.5 or older, you can make a tax-free gift from your IRA to support Friends of the Earth.  Retirees who don’t need the income from required minimum distributions may instead choose to make a charitable gift directly from an IRA without incurring income tax on the withdrawal.

Ask your IRA administrator to make a “qualified charitable distribution” or QCD directly from your IRA account to Friends of the Earth.

Checks should be mailed to:

Friends of the Earth
PO BOX 7010
Merrifield, VA 22116-7010

How it works:

  1. You direct distributions, up to $100,000 per year, from you IRA to Friends of the Earth. This can be a one-time or reoccurring gift.
  2. The distributions go directly to Friends of the Earth and are not subject to income tax.

How you benefit:

  1. You avoid income tax penalty on your distribution.
  2. You have the satisfaction of seeing your gift immediately go to work to support a healthy and just world.

**PLEASE NOTE if you have check-writing privileges with your IRA**

Friends of the Earth strongly encourages you to mail your check to arrive at our office no later than December 15th. Personal checks from an IRA must clear by December 31st to count toward your required distribution for the calendar year. Friends of the Earth is closed the last week of the year.
