Obama administration files request to revoke Yucca Mountain license
Still no way to safely store radioactive waste
Washington, DC – Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica had the following statement in response to the request filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Wednesday by the Department of Energy to revoke the license application for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository:
“I am pleased that President Obama is following through on his pledge to close Yucca Mountain. The revocation of Yucca Mountain’s license application will finally end over twenty years of bad policy and wasted spending on a project that was doomed to fail from the start.
“Closing Yucca Mountain is the right policy for the United States, but it is also a reminder that there is no way to safely store radioactive waste. However, the Obama administration is still moving forward with its $55 billion preemptive bailout of the nuclear industry. It is irresponsible for President Obama to grant taxpayer-backed loan guarantees to build new nuclear reactors when a safe way of dealing with radioactive waste doesn’t exist.”
