Response to Harper on Tar Sands

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a just-finished joint press conference with President Obama, Prime Minister Harper of Canada spoke in favor of the Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline.

Alex Moore, dirty fuels campaigner at Friends of the Earth U.S., had the following response:

“What Prime Minister Harper failed to acknowledge is that tar sands oil is highly polluting. There are cleaner, safer ways to meet U.S. energy needs than to import this dirty oil from Canada via a dangerous pipeline through America’s heartland.

”We’re happy to see that President Obama did not lend his support to this dirty oil pipeline. If the president is serious about making America a leader in clean energy, he has no choice but to stop this project.”
