Friends of the Earth statement on Senate Keystone XL vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, by a vote of 62-37, the U.S. Senate attached a provision to the Senate Budget Resolution expressing support for the Keystone XL pipeline. This vote is non-binding and has no impact on the State Department’s permitting process.

“The Keystone XL pipeline remains the first test of whether President Obama has the fortitude to deal with climate change in his second term. It is disappointing that so many senators reached out to put their thumbs on the scale but it is not surprising since many of these same legislators have received millions in campaign contributions from the companies that stand to make huge profits from this dirty pipeline.”
