Friends of the Earth welcomes scuttling of trade package

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. House of Representatives deferred a final decision on a legislative trade package including Trade Adjustment Assistance, Fast Track trade promotion authority, and Customs bills.

Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica had this to say:

Today’s move to delay final decision on the trade package represents a significant victory in the fight to ensure that toxic trade agreements like the TPP do not get bulldozed through Congress.

The political deals that President Obama cut with Republicans to slash Medicare funding and undermine action on climate change revealed how low Obama is willing to go in selling out ordinary Americans and the environment.

Today’s victory, while important, is not decisive. Friends of the Earth and others will remain vigilant to ensure that future efforts to pass Fast Track and climate-destroying trade agreements are defeated.
