Bye bye Boehner: House Speaker resigns to forestall shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. — This morning it was reported that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) plans to end his five year tenure as Speaker of the House, and resign from Congress in October.
Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica issued the following statement in response:
I’d shed a tear for Speaker Boehner if I weren’t so terrified by what comes next from the Republican party. Speaker Boehner presided over the most anti-environmental Congress in American history. It’s a Congress — out of step with the American people — that was bought with oil industry money, and which tried to undo nearly every environmental protection on the books. Yet even the most extreme Speaker in living memory was not radical enough for the rank and file Republicans.
