Friends of the Earth Rocks Against the TPP in San Francisco

BERKELEY, CALIF. – On Friday, September 9 at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, Friends of the Earth will join actress Evangeline Lilly, and musicians for a free concert to highlight opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement that will soon be presented to Congress. Musical artists will include legendary New York hip hop group, Dead Prez, ex- Dead Kennedys punk singer Jello Biafra, Grammy winning LA Latin rock band La Santa Cecelia, Bay Area indie rock project Built for the Sea and others. Then, on Saturday, September 10, at San Francisco’s NWBLK gallery, Evangeline Lilly will host a teach-in and training session. The Rock Against the TPP events in San Francisco are part of a national series concerning the most environmentally dangerous trade deal you never heard of, the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Doug Norlen, the director of economic policy at Friends of the Earth, who will speak at the events and lead the Friends of the Earth delegation in San Francisco, said:

The free concert and teach-in in San Francisco will effectively communicate to California Members of Congress that a vote for the TPP is a vote for climate destruction. The TPP would ramp up global warming by increasing U.S. coal, oil and gas exports to the world. TPP would also allow climate polluters to turn to secretive international tribunals where they can sue governments for billions. TransCanada is using a similar provision in the North American Free Trade Agreement to sue the U.S. for $15 billion for stopping construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Friends of the Earth will continue to rock against the TPP until this unjust corporate power grab is dead in the water.
